🚦 The U.S. Economy at Mid-Decade: Time Past Is Time Present? | The Economic Club of Florida via YT

  • Opening this year’s Economic Club of Florida monthly luncheon, Amanda Phalin discussed The Economy’s Mixed Signals. Dr. Phalin is an instructional associate professor at the University of Florida’s Warrington College of Business, specializing in international business and managerial economics. An award-winning educator and former international news writer, she focuses on trade policy, global markets, and broader economic issues.

  • 💡 Key insights from the event:

    • The U.S. economy is not simply “strong” or “weak”—it’s experiencing structural shifts, and tariff policy may help explain why macroeconomic data and lived economic reality feel disconnected.

    • Mixed Economic Signals | Strong Growth vs. Real Strain: GDP growth appears strong, suggesting macroeconomic resilience. At the same time, there’s an affordability crisis (housing, consumer costs).

    • Tariffs as a Central Factor: Dr. Phalin highlights evolving U.S. tariff policy as a major influence on current economic conditions.

    • Labor Market Shifts: Signs of labor market cooling may reflect structural adjustments rather than collapse.
