🔥🚒 Camp Ignite Introduced Young Ladies to Firefighting | Fox 49
The Tallahassee Fire Department opened its doors to young women through Camp Ignite, a two-day program that introduces participants to fire service while building confidence, leadership, and practical skills. Activities include tackling simulated car fires and rappelling down buildings.
This year marked Camp Ignite’s second year, drawing at least one returning participant who has already completed fire school. “I did not originally want to be a firefighter, but going through that program... it definitely pushed me into it, and I just fell in love with it since then,” said Sarah Rose Aikens, a returning camper.
Women make up only about 5% of professional firefighters, according to UCLA. Programs like Camp Ignite show girls they belong in the fire service. For first-time camper Olivia Zinker, the experience built confidence, connection, and practical skills she can use to help others.
Organizers say the program’s impact goes beyond future firefighting careers, fostering strong connections among participants. Aikens added that the two-day experience quickly turned the girls into a close-knit group.
