🔍 Research Advances in Superconducting Wires at FAMU-FSU College of Engineering | FSU News
Researchers at FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, in collaboration with Advanced Conductor Technologies (ACT) and SuperPower Inc., have developed a new superconducting wire design that minimizes the impact of defects, making wires more reliable and cost-effective. This new technology is crucial for the future of electric motors, medical equipment, and many other high-tech applications. ⚙️
The breakthrough involves a design called Conductor on Round Core (CORC®) wire, which uses multiple bands of superconducting tape wound in a spiral shape. Rather than relying on soldering, these wires use pressure between the bands to allow electricity to flow smoothly, creating a flexible, strong conductor that’s less prone to failure.
One of the key innovations is the concept of "current sharing." If one part of the wire has a defect, the current can jump to a neighboring wire, ensuring the flow of electricity continues without significant loss. This increases the efficiency of wire production, reduces waste, and lowers costs for manufacturers. 🏭
The research is a product of long-term collaboration between academia and industry. The project has been funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and has built upon previous work supported by the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, highlighting the importance of partnerships in advancing technology. 💻
Superconducting wires are critical in a wide range of fields, from electric vehicles and fusion energy to medical imaging and AI data centers. This new development makes it possible to produce high-performance superconducting wires at a lower cost, potentially revolutionizing industries that rely on efficient, lossless power transmission.

🌱 Harvest Singularity Invests $66 Million in Newberry | Newberry, Florida
Harvest Singularity is putting $66M into a fully climate-controlled hydroponic greenhouse in Newberry, becoming the first private company in the F-300 AgFoodTech Innovation Park. It will produce over 3 tons of leafy greens a day.
The project will create more than 50 new full-time jobs, offering an impressive average salary of about $91,000. Local officials say the investment brings a major economic boost to the community. 🧑🤝🧑
The 325,000 sq. ft. facility will run on advanced precision agriculture tools, including AI systems, robotics, and smart sensors for efficient production. It will grow crops year-round using significantly less water, land, and no pesticides.
Harvest Singularity plans to work closely with University of Florida - Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), which sits within the same AgFoodTech park, to advance modern farming methods. Both groups aim to strengthen Florida’s role in next-generation agriculture. 🪴
The company also intends to expand across Florida with multiple controlled-environment farms, helping improve food security and shorten supply chains statewide. Their long-term vision includes producing leafy greens and fruits at scale.
