☁️ Sky Psychology. Researchers from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering discovered how changes in flight angles can trigger turbulence and vortex formations that affect aircraft stability, revealing broader patterns in how motion through air shapes outcomes. If you're like our boss, Julia, she has a fear of flying and appreciates this kind of research.

🛫 How Flight Angles Shape Turbulence | FSU News

  • FAMU-FSU researchers discovered that even small changes in an aircraft’s flight angle can create unstable swirling air currents called vortices, which may affect stability and control. 🎚️

  • The study, published in the Journal of Aircraft, examined how airflow changes around cone-shaped aircraft noses traveling at Mach 1.1.

  • At steeper angles, airflow became increasingly chaotic, forming asymmetric vortices that can push aircraft off course or strain critical components. ⚙️

  • Using simulations and experimental testing, the team identified how smaller vortices merge into larger disruptions, helping explain why airflow suddenly becomes unstable in high-speed flight.

  • Researchers say the findings could support safer, more stable missile and aircraft designs, while also advancing future AI-driven flight control systems.
