🌊✈️ Sea & Sky. Innovation is making waves both underwater and in the skies this week. A FAMU doctoral student has developed a seawater-powered battery that could transform how underwater exploration vehicles operate. Meanwhile, FAU has secured a $4.5M U.S. Air Force grant to build a T-1A Jayhawk flight simulator, advancing the future of pilot training. Together, these breakthroughs show how technology is pushing boundaries from the ocean depths to the open air.

🌊 Seawater-Powered Innovation | WTXL via YT

  • A doctoral student at FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, Destiny Law, is developing a lithium seawater flow battery designed to power unmanned submarines and underwater vehicles.

  • The technology uses seawater as part of the battery’s chemistry, potentially delivering over 10× more energy than traditional lithium-ion batteries.

  • The system could improve military submarine safety, allowing vessels to recharge in about 30 minutes instead of hours or days at the surface. ⛵

  • Law’s research is part of a renewed partnership between FAMU and Boeing, and after graduating this spring, she will join Boeing full-time to continue advancing the technology. ⚙️

✈️ Jayhawk Flight Simulator Arrives at FAU | Refresh Miami

  • Florida Atlantic University received a $4.5M T-1A Jayhawk mixed-reality flight simulator from the U.S. Air Force to expand research in AI, autonomy, and aerospace systems. 🚀

  • The system replicates the cockpit, flight dynamics, and environment of the T-1A Jayhawk training jet, combining real controls with immersive digital simulations.

  • Researchers can safely test AI, autonomous decision-making, and sensor systems in complex or high-risk flight scenarios without the cost of real aircraft testing.

  • Located at FAU Tech Runway in Boca Raton, the simulator will support research, industry collaboration, and hands-on student training.
