💐✨ The past, present, and future of Railroad Square. | Tal Mag
Railroad Square covers nine acres between FSU and FAMU, marked by historic railroad tracks and vibrant murals.
In the late 1970s, Nan Boynton transformed it into Tallahassee’s cultural arts hub. 🫶🏻 Artists brought life to the district with studios, live performances, handcrafted goods, and colorful street art. Boynton launched May Fair in 1980 and opened 621 Gallery in 1981; By 2000, it became the center of the monthly First Friday arts celebration.
On May 10, 2024, tornadoes hit Railroad Square hard. Despite the damage, the community rallied – volunteers saved what they could, and contractors rebuilt. Today, 75 shops, eateries, and galleries are open, keeping it a key part of the city’s creative scene.
Tallahassee has successfully rallied to reinvent spaces before. The Blueprint Intergovernmental Agencies’ investments in Cascades Park, FAMU Way, and Railroad Square itself demonstrate a commitment to urban placemaking. Now, local advocates are pushing for “creative placekeeping” – ensuring that existing artistic spaces are preserved, restored, and enhanced. ❤️🩹
What’s Next for Railroad Square? Railroad Square remains a popular weekend spot, but its future is uncertain. Developers want in, artists want to preserve their spirit, and the community waits to see if Tallahassee will protect this cultural gem. Known for its lively First Friday events – free monthly gatherings from 6 PM to 9 PM featuring galleries, music, food trucks, and local vendors – the district’s heart beats strong, but the next chapter is still unwritten.

FOX IN THE HEN HOUSE

🦠🌾 Bird Flu Alert: The Fox in the Hen House. Scott McPherson Discussed the Growing Threat of the H5N1 Outbreak. | ECF via YT
The Economic Club of Florida recently featured former State Rep. Scott McPherson, who shared urgent insights on the bird flu outbreak, especially the highly contagious and deadly H5N1 strain.
H5N1 has impacted nearly 1,000 dairy herds in 17 states and affected over 91M birds nationwide. With a fatality rate between 20% and 30%, it far exceeds COVID-19’s 1% death rate. So far, 70 U.S. poultry and cattle workers have contracted it, with one confirmed death.
“Compared to what H5N1 can do, COVID was a summer cold,” McPherson said during a recent call with Club officers. He warned that once the fatality rate is confirmed, H5N1 could outpace SARS, which had a 9% death rate but was less contagious before symptoms showed.
The virus is already driving up egg prices due to high chicken mortality. McPherson stressed the importance of preparedness, highlighting vaccines and antivirals like Oseltamivir (Tamiflu). He also answered members’ questions during the session.
McPherson’s pandemic expertise spans nearly two decades. Beyond his time in the Florida House, he led Team Florida 2000, the state’s Y2K preparedness effort, which became a national model and helped shape post 9/11 homeland security.

Tip 5: Evaluate Employer-Sponsored Insurance - If your employer offers health insurance, it is often the most cost-effective option.
Many employers subsidize premiums, making it more affordable than private plans. However, if you're self-employed, you'll need to explore other options, such as Health Insurance for Self-employed individuals.
