A cornerstone of American freedom: Leon County is home to the first reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Florida (May 20, 1865) and played a critical role in the civil rights movement, including the 1956 Tallahassee Bus Boycott led by FAMU students.
Recognized in America250: The John G. Riley Center & Museum is the only Black history site in Tallahassee featured on the official America250FL Road Trip, highlighting the county’s national significance.
