Celebs & Heroes. In this edition, we’re recognizing not just FSU's remarkable alumni but also a fearless 9-year-old who survived a shark attack. Florida often tops the charts for shark and alligator attacks. What tops that? A miracle. Also, team CityClips will hopefully bask in the sun (and not thunderstorms) tomorrow for the 4th of July weekend. Have a happy Independence Day! 🎆🌟🎓

SHARK ATTACKS

  • Leah Lendel, 9, was enjoying a typical day with her family on Florida’s Gulf Coast — sightseeing, getting ice cream and pizza, and snorkeling, when she suddenly felt a strong pull on her arm. She screamed, first in pain, then in horror. | USA Today

  • Boca Grande Fire Chief C.W. Blosser told The Tampa Bay Times that bystanders pulled Leah from the water and carried her to a nearby road, where she was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital. Shark bites are rare in the area, with the last one five years ago. Though risk rises during tarpon season, Blosser called this an isolated incident.

  • According to updates shared on Instagram and in a public statement from the family, the shark bite caused severe damage to Leah’s wrist. Her mother, Nadia Lendel, said surgeons stabilized the broken bones with pins and used arteries from her leg to help restore blood flow to her hand. “She thought she would lose her hand for good,” her mother posted.

  • Leah underwent surgery and soon regained movement in two fingers. Shortly after, her mother called it a “miracle” when all her fingers were moving again. Doctors planned to change her cast without sedation to monitor healing.

  • Data Shows: Florida is No. 1 in the U.S. when it comes to shark bites, with more than triple the number of unprovoked attacks in 2024 from the state listed as No. 2, Hawaii. 🦈 | Daytona News Journal
