🛵 Safer Streets Ahead: Florida Sets E-Bike Speed Limits | Sebastian Daily
Florida lawmakers have approved new rules setting speed limits for electric bicycles to improve pedestrian safety in shared spaces. The measure aims to reduce accidents as e-bike use continues to grow statewide. SB 382 passed the Senate on Feb. 25 with no opposition and was approved by the House on Mar. 9.
The legislation sets clear speed limits for e-bikes in busy areas like sidewalks, parks, and multi-use trails. Local governments may also enforce stricter rules if needed. Riders must slow to 10 mph when within 50 ft. of pedestrians and give a warning, such as a bell or voice, before passing.
Why It Matters: E-bikes are becoming more popular, and with that comes growing safety concerns, especially in crowded areas. Rep. Yvette Benarroch of Naples, the bill’s House sponsor, has been working on this measure for about a year following the tragic loss of a 14-year-old rider. In the future, a task force may explore additional safety measures, such as age limits or licensing. For now, e-bikes follow standard bicycle rules, can use sidewalks where permitted, and riders under 16 must wear helmets.
