In Partnership With:

My co-founder, Ali challenged me to keep it short and I have yet to get to the point of publishing beyond 1-2x per week. There’s so much to share! My goal is to share only the best of the best. With his expertise, I value his input that there is more value to frequency and it simplifies the curating process. However, I wonder as a reader do you think you’d open an email newsletter as often? I find myself not opening an email newsletter that sends out lengthy, daily news no matter how modern the format is. What do you think? We’d love to hear from you! ECONOMIC DEV

It was a busy week for Tallahassee as a series of events happened simultaneously. You had FSU’s Discovery Days, OEV’s MED Week, and TalTech’s Conference today. Yes it’s Julia here, and one thing that stood out to me is that in order to foster economic growth our community needs to get on the same page and start investing in tech. Here are my key takeaways from events I attended.

  • SBIR/STTR GrantsDid you know that a company with 100 employees or less can qualify to win $50k to $1.5 million in non-dilutive funds towards R&D BEFORE you have a working product or patent? That’s right. It’s like a no brainer for someone who wants to experiment on a tech idea before it exists. We have a local expert, Mike Tentnowski, who has helped founders win grant funding through this program.

  • Invest in TechTo quote Dustin Rivest (223 Agency), significant investment is not "$10k here or there, but maybe $10 million into 10 tech startups at $1m each. 9 might fail but 1 can potentially be worth $100 million or more. Economic growth in the next 5-10 years will happen in tech.”

SPORTS

FSU: It’s Family Weekend

FSU will play against Virginia Tech at home this weekend. For non-FSU alumni, like myself, Family Weekend is major for FSU and Tallahassee, as this brings in many out of town alumni and extended family to town. In other words, another economic driver for hospitality and retail industries in town. I didn’t realize how jam packed the weekend was like until I Googled, “FSU 2023 Family Weekend” and found their “Programs & Activities” subpage. In other words, there might be a lot of traffic around campus.

FAMU: Homecoming is coming up

One of the top public universities and #1 HBCUs in the U.S. is right here in Tallahassee and FAMU’s Homecoming is on Oct. 21st-28th. Unless you are part of the FAMU circles, or follow the FAMUly, you will most likely hear about their star-studded lineup too late or after the fact. Here is their impressive landing page and schedule with tickets on sale. Also, Capital City Chamber recently shared their event, “Economic Impact Homecoming Breakfast.”
