HONORING BETTY ANN

🎨 LeMoyne Honors Betty Ann Munroe Skelton | Tal Dem

  • Last week, LeMoyne Arts officially dedicated its iconic front porch in honor of a woman whose life was as interwoven with Tallahassee as the historic house she grew up in.

  • The Meginnis-Munroe House, LeMoyne's home since 1972 and now on the National Register of Historic Places, now features The Betty Ann Munroe Skelton Front Porch. The dedication took place on November 1st.

  • Betty Ann (1933–2023) once called the house, built by her ancestor in 1854, the "happy house." Her widower, Benson L. Skelton, Jr., described the naming as a "perfect tribute to her happy and generous spirit."

  • Skelton's impact stretched far into the community. She was a founding member of the Committee of 99, helped start the Leon County School Resource Officer Program, and was a founding member of the Big Bend Hospice Foundation.

  • The porch itself is a fitting memorial, as LeMoyne Executive Director Arielle Raff noted it's the "foremost gathering spot for gallery openings and other special events" - the first space guests enjoy upon arrival.

🎭 Literary Heroines Rewrite History | FSU

  • Four unforgettable literary heroines walk into a play... and refuse to accept their endings. FSU's School of Theatre delivered the ultimate girl-power rewrite with "You on the Moors Now," a production that served a modern-day twist to classic lit's most memorable women.

  • The play took protagonists from classics like Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, and Little Women, freeing them from their 19th-century constraints and allowing them to rewrite their own stories in a 21st-century container.

  • FSU Assistant Professor Jasmine Bracey directed the sold-out production, focusing on the theme of "liberty" and the human desire "to play." The play challenged the audience to ask: Are you saying yes to a role, or are you saying yes to yourself?

  • Bracey brought a philosophy of collaboration to the Lab stage, believing that the true "ownership" of the story rested with the actors. This approach created an electric, dynamic production.

  • The show's run ended on November 9th and was exceptionally popular, quickly selling out its final performances.

  • While the acclaimed show is over, you can still check out future productions! View the FSU School of Theatre's upcoming calendar.
