🦾 AI Robotics Pave New Paths in Stroke Recovery. | FAMU-FSU College of Engineering
Taylor Higgins, Ph.D., assistant professor at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, was awarded a $798K NSF grant to explore how AI and robotics can transform rehabilitation for stroke survivors and patients with balance disorders.
Her research team is developing intelligent robotic systems that adapt to each patient’s unique learning patterns, acting less like machines and more like personalized coaches in the recovery journey.
To study motor learning safely, the team uses a novel unicycle model instead of complex walking simulations. This clever approach keeps experiments controlled while offering rich data on how humans and robots interact. 🤖
Beyond physical therapy, the work also addresses psychological barriers like the fear of falling, which often slows recovery. By providing consistent, adaptive support, the robots help patients build confidence as they regain independence.
The project is fueled by an interdisciplinary collaboration, blending insights from education, machine learning, and engineering. The long-term vision: shorten rehab times, improve patient outcomes, and reshape how technology supports human healing. 🏥
