EMERGENCY

🚨 🆘 Use of Video Tech for Emergency Calls in Florida County 911 is Set in Motion. This technology is the first of its kind in Central Florida and has the capability to save lives in a state-of-the art and creative way.

  • Orange County has implemented a new form of emergency communications technology that allows residents to make video calls to first responders.

  • The tech was developed by Carbyne, a software company whose mission is to modernize emergency communications.

  • When residents call 911, dispatchers will first ask them a series of questions to gather background information. The caller will then be sent a link via text message that gives them the option to begin a livestream.

  • Allocated $16,680 toward the planning and implementation of the video software. Emergency responders receive around 350-400 calls per day.

MEASURING SHIP EMISSIONS

FSU researchers investigate how aerosols from ships affect cloud formation and how it affects climate change. 🌎

  • Researchers examine how different particles expelled in ship emissions, called aerosols, affect cloud formation and whether technology can harness this phenomenon to help reduce some impacts of climate change.

  • This study is led by Michael Diamond, an assistant professor in Florida State University’s Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science.

  • Understanding how and why different ship tracks form will help regulators anticipate potential effects from future changes to emissions.

  • The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Program Office is funding the $736,494 project.
