Leon County becomes first to reduce carbon emissions with yard debris.
An environmental start-up, engineering company ReCap is turning Leon County yard waste into something more useful called biochar.
Biochar is a charcoal-like substance that is made from things like branches, tree limbs and twigs often used to help with soil fertilization.
Leon County leaders voted to continue a partnership with ReCap to recycle yard debris. They have converted 15 tons of yard waste into biochar, preventing nearly all the carbon produced by the waste from getting into the air.
