Florida State University researchers including Zhe He, Senior Author and Director for FSU’s Institute for Successful Longevity, and Balu Bhasuran, Visiting Assistant Professor, used large language models (LLMs) such as GPT-4, GPT-3.5, and Claude-2 to test how effectively AI can generate differential diagnoses using real patient case reports, showing promising results in supporting clinical decisions. 🏥
The study found that including lab test results—such as liver function and serology panels—significantly boosted the accuracy of AI-generated diagnoses, with GPT-4 achieving up to 80% lenient accuracy when lab data was provided.
Researchers highlighted that the AI models could often pinpoint the correct diagnosis even for rare or complex conditions, demonstrating potential to enhance diagnostic confidence and speed in everyday clinical practice.
The project not only strengthens FSU’s ongoing LabGenie initiative aimed at improving patient understanding of lab results but also underscores the real-world benefits of AI integration in reducing diagnostic errors and health care costs. 💰Supported by major institutions like the National Library of Medicine and Tampa General Hospital, the study brought together experts from multiple universities, showing strong collaboration in tackling health care’s most pressing challenges.
