FL Tech Shines. We enjoyed the beautiful Memorial Day weekend and are thankful to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. With freedom comes more opportunities for creativity and innovation. Despite recent federal cuts, a FAMU-FSU engineering whiz just landed a $5M NASA grant to explore 3D printing for space — because building the future... at other planets seems to be a thing these days. Meanwhile, the 2025 Florida Technology & Innovation Solution Summit has opened its doors to dreamers, doers, and data crunchers alike. From cosmic construction to backyard breakthroughs, catch what’s up in our sunshine state.

3D PRINTING FOR SPACE

  • Professors Subramanian Ramakrishnan and Jamel Ali from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering are spearheading a $5M NASA-funded initiative to revolutionize how astronauts manufacture tools, sensors, and even tissues during space missions, aiming for greater self-sufficiency in orbit and beyond. 🚀

  • The team is developing innovative 3D printing inks using MXenes and nanoparticles, which allow astronauts to create gas and strain sensors, flexible circuits, antennas, and radiation shields on demand, crucial for adapting to the unpredictable challenges of deep-space missions.

  • In a bold step toward sustainability, the researchers plan to use lunar and Martian regolith (soil) to create specialized inks that can be printed into functional structures, making it possible to build and repair equipment using local planetary resources.

  • Their use of electrohydrodynamic printing (EHD), paired with laser curing, enables the precise, rapid creation of complex sensor systems and electronic components, which is especially important for time-sensitive environments like the International Space Station (ISS).

  • Professor Ali’s research group is exploring how human cells and tissues assemble in microgravity, contributing to breakthroughs in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering for space. Working with the Mayo Clinic and NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, they aim to produce next-generation biomedical tools that could one day support long-duration missions or medical needs in remote areas on Earth. 🌎
