Florida A&M University's Marching 100 made history at the Coachella stage alongside hip-hop icon Travis Scott in a groundbreaking performance that fused HBCU band tradition with modern rap energy. Under the desert sky, the band delivered a fierce rendition of Scott’s hit “4x4,” igniting the crowd with their signature precision and energy.
Dr. Shelby Chipman, director of the Marching 100, described the moment as “bigger than a stage—it was a cultural crossroads,” highlighting the band's role in bridging musical worlds and showcasing the rich legacy of HBCU bands.
This collaboration underscores the growing recognition of HBCU bands in mainstream music, offering a platform for their artistry on a global stage.
In March, 26 students from the Marching 100 headed to the festival, adding Coachella to their incredible resume, which includes the Super Bowl, GRAMMYs, and a global appearance at Louis Vuitton's Men’s Fashion Show in Paris.
Coachella was uncharted territory. They were standing beneath the lights of one of the world’s most iconic music festivals, where mega-stars Cardi B, Teyana Taylor, Victoria Monet, and Travis Barker were in attendance.
