IMPACTS OF FLOODING

Rapid Response Research (RAPID) aims to identify the impacts of hurricanes and flooding on public health. | FAMU-FSU College of Engineering
A research project at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, funded by the National Science Foundation’s (NSF’s) Grants for Rapid Response Research (RAPID), is delving into the secondary effects of flooding on residential buildings, indoor air quality, and human respiratory health. 🫁😮💨
Ebrahim Ahmadisharaf is leading a study at the Resilient Infrastructure and Disaster Response Center (RIDER) in the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, collaborating with an interdisciplinary team of hydrologic engineers and public health scientists. The analysis will address a critical gap in understanding how floods drive mold growth in houses and affect the residents with respiratory conditions like asthma.
“We want to identify how flood characteristics, building attributes and human behavior, lead to higher levels of mold growth after an event,” Ahmadisharaf said. “We also want to understand how living in flooded homes influences asthma symptoms among residents.”
The research outcome promises to be far-reaching, offering valuable insights that can inform building design, occupational health science and public health policy. The project aims to educate families about the impacts of flood events on indoor air pollution (mold growth) and asthma in the affected buildings and provides a foundation for the development of timely strategies for disaster management in population centers. 💡
The research is funded by a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation through Florida State University in collaboration with the Harvard School of Public Health.

CYBERSECURITY
AI FRAUD IN RE
🏠 Real estate fraud using AI in South Florida | WSVN
A local buyer, Udi Levi, was nearly defrauded in a land purchase where AI-generated images were used to pose as the property owner. The fraudsters provided matching IDs, making the scam difficult to detect at first. 🔎
Miami Dade Police and the Broward Sheriff’s Office confirmed this was their first case of AI involvement in real estate fraud but anticipate more cases to follow.
To avoid AI-driven real estate fraud, implement multi-factor verification systems such as live video authentication, use blockchain for secure property records, and rely on digital forensic tools to detect deepfakes or AI-generated identities during transactions. 🤓
