A global technology outage grounded airplanes, disconnected hospitals, and shut down banks. The surprising cause was a faulty software update from cybersecurity company CrowdStrike rather than a cyberattack. 🌟 | Space Coast

  • Cascading Effect: The outage disrupted airplanes, hospitals, and banks, highlighting concerns about the interconnectedness of systems.

  • Cause: The incident was triggered by a faulty software update, not a cyberattack, from CrowdStrike.

  • Critical Infrastructure: The outage underscored the vulnerability of critical infrastructure and the need for robust cybersecurity measures. This is also revealed to potential hackers, how 1 target can now affect entire systems for countries and large organizations.

  • Major Companies affected: Delta, American, Frontier, Sky News, and other institutions like hospitals and universities

  • Estimated Losses: Fortune 500 companies will have to cover $5.4 billion in damages | Fortune

  • Florida: Locally, we heard friends’ flights were cancelled, and some could not access the internet. The Starbucks app was down. Also, some South FL Orgs were also affected.

The University of Florida has made significant investments in AI, expanded its curriculum offerings, and increased faculty expertise to enhance research capabilities, especially in predicting and responding to diseases. | UF Innovate

Nearly 160 software companies have signed CISA’s Secure by Design Pledge to improve cybersecurity and protect customers from hackers. 🌍 | GovTech

  • Cybersecurity Goals: The Secure by Design Pledge is a voluntary commitment to work on seven key cybersecurity goals.

  • Measurable Progress: Companies must make measurable progress within a year and disclose their achievements or obstacles.

  • Company Responsibility: Companies are encouraged to take responsibility for customer security outcomes, be transparent, and promote effective cybersecurity.

  • Note: The GovTech article was published July 5th, before the major outage occurred. Among the 160, Crowdstrike was a part of this list and is still on the web site. CISA may have to refresh the list or establish new criteria due to the recent events.
