After the widespread destruction caused by the storm and 2 EF2 tornadoes, another rare phenomena was sighted in the Tallahassee sky. Our town is still in recovery mode with parts of town without power and debris yet to be cleared. As we collectively process what happened, we are thankful for how our community is coming together to support those who were majorly impacted. Stay safe as we just got word for more school and state office closures due to another incoming storm.

NIGHT LIGHTS

AURORA BOREALIS

The Aurora Borealis Northern Lights made an appearance in the Tallahassee sky. It was a remarkable day for Tallahasseeans to experience the best and worst side of nature last Friday, May 10th. | Tal Dem

  • The northern lights provided a rare sight for residents across the U.S. and around the world Friday night, with a powerful solar storm fueling a spectacle seen as far south as the Florida Keys.

  • Strong solar flares the sun has been emitting since last Wednesday were responsible for the northern lights being visible across a wide swath of North America and Europe.

  • The best aurora is usually within an hour or two of midnight (between 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM local time). These hours expand towards evening and morning as the level of geomagnetic activity increases, according to NOAA.
