T-day, as in tax day is over. If you are on top of things, then you are relieved. If you are like millions of people you filed for an extension and have until October. Next up, don’t forget to file the annual report for FL Department of State. This applies to all corporations, LLCs, LPs, and LLLPs. Those pesky things are due between Jan. 1st to May 1st for $150 fee and any late submissions cost $400. 😶

CYBERSECURITY CENTERS

Department of Energy Invests $15M Into 6 Universities for Cybersecurity Centers. The centers will focus on cybersecurity research and educate energy professionals. | BestColleges
The cybersecurity centers will work with DOE national labs and energy sector owners, operators, and vendors to research and develop cybersecurity training.
The University of Connecticut, Iowa State University, the Illinois Institute of Technology, Texas Tech University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Florida International University were selected for the cybersecurity centers.
The global cybersecurity workforce grew 8.7% from last year, according to a study by ISC2. Information security analyst is projected to be the fifth fastest-growing career in the U.S. through 2032, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
WEATHER
STORMS & HURRICANES

Researchers Expect ‘Extremely Active’ Hurricane Season. The Colorado State University Tropical Meteorology Project team forecasts 23 named storms, including 11 hurricanes. The Climate Adaptation Center in Florida is predicting 24 named storms, 12 hurricanes. | GovTech
As the El Niño conditions likely transition to La Niña conditions during the summer and fall this year, researchers are forecasting an "extremely active" hurricane season.
Both research institutions predict an active hurricane season in response to record-warm sea surface temperatures in much of the southern Atlantic, Caribbean, and even part of the Gulf of Mexico.
"These are record-setting warm temperatures for this early in the season," a portion of the Climate Adaptation Center in Florida stated.

Z-SOURCE INVERTER

FAMU-FSU researcher controls voltage response for safer electric grid. Professor Fang Peng shows how a semiconductor device he created, named a Z-source inverter, can rapidly reduce voltage and current in the case of a short-circuit or open-circuit fault. | FSU News
Existing safety mechanisms that stop electricity during a fault work quickly, but not always quickly enough. A typical circuit breaker could take around 50 milliseconds to activate — still long enough to kill a person or spark a fire. Peng’s digital Z-source converter/inverter can protect in 5 microseconds, or 1,000 times faster.
Peng’s solution can be used to retrofit existing infrastructure to make it safer. Diversifying the power grid with renewable energy sources like wind turbines, photovoltaic cells, and fuel cells is one way to regulate increases and decreases in voltage.
Much of the electric grid in the United States was built and expanded in the 1960s and 1970s. Along with fires from downed power lines, aging infrastructure poses other problems, such as power outages or vulnerability to cyberattacks. Peng’s research was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Solar Energy Technologies Office.
